Love, God, Führer: Inscribing Trust in Everyday Life

Prof. Andrew Stuart Bergerson (University of Missouri-Kansas
City/National Taipei University)

Date: October 16, 2015 (Friday), 4:00-5:30 pm

Venue: Room 701, Research Hall, Institute of History and Philology,
Academia Sinica

During the Third Reich, Hilde Laube and Roland Nordhoff lived in small
villages in Saxony, were pious Christians, and in terms of Nazi laws,
racially pure Aryans. Roland worked as a teacher before being enlisted
as a sailor in the Navy; Hilde worked as a laborer in a factory until
shortly before their marriage and stayed at home during the war.
Starting in May 1938, they began an extensive correspondence with one
another (www.trugundschein.org) that lasted through the war. Each of
them used the letters to fashion a new sense of self as part of their
courtship and planning their life together, and they did so not only
in the eyes of their Christian God but also increasingly in terms of a
political relationship with Adolf Hitler, the Führer/Leader of Nazi
Germany. This paper traces the process by which they built trust
across these three kinds of relationships—personal, spiritual, and
political—and the connections between them. Using this case study,
Prof. Bergerson discusses epistemological issues concerning the
practice of letter writing as a source for historical scholarship,
interpretive questions about the dynamics of state and society in Nazi
Germany, and larger theoretical questions about how scholars can make
meaningful connections between micro-  and macrohistory.

敬祝 研安
