『第62回講論會』

 

大家好：

 

隨著各大學陸續開學，我們也將迎來本年度第一場講論會。本年度的主題是「帝國的邊界」，我們將從鄰近台灣的東南亞地區開始，為大家邀請到政大歷史系雷恩侯洛伊德（Ryan Holroyd）老師，他的專長是東南亞史與海洋史，此次將以“Words of Advice: The Evolution of Asia’s Maritime Frontier through the Eyes of British Adventures, 1680-1750” 為題，為大家帶來精彩的演講。此外，我們也將邀請成大學歷史系董梵（Frank Dhont）老師與談，他同樣是東南亞史的專家，同時對當地的伊斯蘭信仰有深入研究。這兩位老師都是第一次參與台灣世界史討論會，希望各位朋友們踴躍出席，一起歡迎他們的加入。

 講題：Words of Advice: The Evolution of Asia’s Maritime Frontier through the Eyes of British Adventures, 1680-1750

演講簡介：

In the presentation, I will discuss the ways commercial links evolved between the different regions of maritime Asia (coastal East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Indian Ocean) from the 1680s to the 1750s. I will introduce a number of unpublished reports written by British sailors, merchants, and other travellers who sought to understand the ways that the regions were changing. The presentation will focus on how these writers understood the connections between the commercial opening of the Qing empire, the expansion and collapse of the late Mughal empire, and the Dutch Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie's transition to a territorial power in Southeast Asia. The presentation will evaluate the accuracy and usefulness of these British reports, and will conclude by examining the strategies that British adventurers used to cope with the developments they perceived.
