MAGNA CARTA IN THE AGE OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

Abstract
The 800th anniversary of Magna Carta is being celebrated with
exhibitions, conferences, workshops and a host of scholarly and
popular publications produced across the world. Few people realize
that what is being celebrated is not the charter of liberties agreed
at Runnymede in 1215. This agreement was in fact revoked by King John
and annulled by the Pope. Instead, what is being celebrated,
particularly in Britain and North America is a document that has been
repeatedly reinterpreted and even misinterpreted over the centuries.
These developments have produced a great many changes in how Magna
Carta is understood. This lecture will look at how Magna Carta came to
represent a commitment to a wider range of rights and liberties for
all people. It will concentrate on how Magna Carta was interpreted in
the later eighteenth century by conservative and radical commentators
in Britain and Ireland and most especially how it was used by American
Patriots to justify their resistance to Britain’s imperial authority
in America and how it influenced the constitutional developments made
in the new republic.
