摘要：
The story of early English encounters with the Far East is one of
repeated failure. Latecomers on the stage of global trade, the English
show a strong desire to enter direct trade with China and Japan from
the Elizabethan age onwards, yet are time and again frustrated in
their expectations. Various expeditions tragically fail to locate the
North-West passage, a letter from Queen Elizabeth to the Emperor of
China apparently never reaches its addressee, an attempt to sail up
the Pearl River turns into disaster, and English factories in Japan
and Taiwan are short-lived and spectacularly unsuccessful. It is
before this background that I will analyse intriguing literary hoaxes
such as the invented ‘reply’ by the Emperor of China to Elizabeth
(around 1600) or the Historical Description of Taiwan (1704) by the
fake Formosan George Psalmanazar. If Far Eastern powers fail to
respond to English advances, the writers of these hoaxes react to the
English frustration by pretending to be spokespersons for the Far East
with which the English so much wanted to come into contact. I propose
to have a closer look at the literary strategies employed in, and the
ideological implications of, these pseudo-Asian texts, asking what
they reveal about specifically English ambitions and anxieties.
演講人介紹：
Ralf Hertel is Professor of English Literature at the University of
Trier, Germany. He received his Ph.D. from the Free University,
Berlin, and taught as Associate Professor at the University of Hamburg
before being appointed full professor for English Literature at the
University of Trier. His research interests include sensuousness in
and of fiction, early modern Englishness, and Anglo-Chinese
encounters. He is author of Making Sense: Sense Perception in the
British Novel of the 1980s and 1990s (2005) and Staging England
(2014), a study of the negotiation of national identity in the
Elizabethan history play. He has co-edited Performing National
Identity: Anglo-Italian Cultural Encounters (2008, with Manfred
Pfister) and Early Encounters with the Islamic East: Cultures at Play
(2012, with Sabine Schülting and Sabine Lucia Müller).
