Latecomers on the stage of global trade, the English show a strong desire to enter direct trade with China and Japan from the Elizabethan age onwards, yet are time and again frustrated in their expectations. Various expeditions tragically fail to locate the North-West passage, a letter from Queen Elizabeth to the Emperor of China apparently never reaches its addressee, an attempt to sail up the Pearl River turns into disaster, and English factories in Japan and Taiwan are short-lived and spectacularly unsuccessful. Dickinson University of Edinburgh Abstract The 800th anniversary of Magna Carta is being celebrated with exhibitions, conferences, workshops and a host of scholarly and popular publications produced across the world. Few people realize that what is being celebrated is not the charter of liberties agreed at Runnymede in 1215. This agreement was in fact revoked by King John and annulled by the Pope.  Instead, what is being celebrated, particularly in Britain and North America is a document that has been repeatedly reinterpreted and even misinterpreted over the centuries. 各位世界史討論會的老師與同學：  大家好，義大利史學大師 Carlo Ginzburg 應中研院史語所之邀，將於2015年9月中旬訪問臺灣， 史語所將安排兩場演講與一場座談會， 其中座談會將安排在臺大歷史系， 時間預定在2015年9月18日下午。 目前更細節的時間尚未規劃，僅有日期與地點，其內容請詳參以下： Carlo Ginzburg 研習工作坊 Ginzburg 教授乃是新文化史的重要人物，對當代史學研究有重大影響， 出版的著作已成為現代史學之經典作品。史語所難得邀請 Ginzburg 教授來臺，為了讓臺灣年輕學生也有跟他有互動的機會， 與臺大歷史系合作，在2015年8月份舉辦一個短期的工作坊， 邀請同學參加。工作坊預計安排三次研習會， 由老師帶領參加之學員，一起研讀、討論 Carlo Ginzburg 的新文化史著作，屆時參與演講會與座談會，各位同學可與 Carlo Ginzburg 教授進行更有意義的互動。 這次工作坊預定閱讀的資料依序如下， 本系與史語所會提供閱讀資料給報名參加的同學： 時間一：2015年8月21日（週五）下午（暫定） 地　點：臺大文學院20教室 指定閱讀：Edward Muir & Guido Ruggiero (eds.), Microhistory & the Lost Peoples of Europe (Baltimore: John Hopkins U.
