演講摘要 (Abstract):
The talk will
begin with some autobiographical reflections on coming from the West of
Scotland in the 1950s, and the different influences from my mother’s and
father’s sides of the family. It will be suggested that a large part of my
disagreement with the paradigms which were dominant in the field of labour
history when I began my research was due to coming from the northern industrial
city of Glasgow when most of the other academics came from the south of
England. I will then outline the course that my research on the British shipbuilding
industry took, indicating the difficulties and opportunities connected with
different types of sources; and summarizing the main findings about changes in
the workplace, trade union organisation and popular politics in Britain between
the 1870s and the 1950s.
The talk will
then broaden out to include my work in collaboration with other scholars and my
latest book, a collection of essays on Alternatives
to State-Socialism in Britain edited with Professor Peter Ackers of de
Montfort University. Collaborating with others has allowed me to develop some
bold long-term themes about the nature of popular politics in the UK,
particularly the hitherto largely neglected contribution of liberal radicalism
up to the First World War, and its continuation thereafter in the form of
twentieth-century liberal pluralism. I will then give an overview of what these
new essays have to say about aspects of labour organisation (including trade
unions, the cooperative movement, working-class women activists and the
Nonconformist Protestant churches); labour leadership (including the
progressive employer Edward Cadbury alongside the important trade unionists
Walter Citrine and Frank Chapple); and leading labour intellectuals (including
G.D.H. Cole and Michael Young). On this basis, some suggestions will be made
about a way forward for the British Labour Party today.
